Chaw Fa relates to the umbrellas adorning Lao temple roofs - seated above the 'Chapel' - and vary according to their religious merit. Their design can range from one layer, up to 17 layers - one being for the common people and 17 denoting royal patronage. Although particularly Laotian, they may also appear on Northern Thai temples due probably to the Lanna (or Lannathai) Kingdom - once the power base of the whole of Northern Thailand and parts of present day Burma and Laos.
